In Russia, the years between the death of Ivan the Terrible and the accession of the Romanovs to the throne are known as the “Time of Troubles”. During this period, Boris Godunov is pushing for power with unconditional determination. However, the ghosts of the past catch up with him, he dies insane and abandoned and betrayed by everyone. Meanwhile, the country is sinking ever deeper into corruption, coups and intrigues. A new “time of turmoil” dawns during Modest Mussorgsky's lifetime: the old order is wavering and can no longer endure, everyone feels that. In a period of political upheaval and rocked by dramatic upheavals in his private life, Mussorgsky creates a work about the arrogance of power and the eroticism of betrayal that is as contradictory and fascinating as his personality.
