Rarely have so many musical notes been seen in a single evening. Right from the start of the overture, we are presented with the original manuscript of the score to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro . And the notes race, becoming drawn figures, telling the story of desire and the planned wedding of Susanna and Figaro, even before we see the lovers on stage. Director Stefan Herheim's production offers a counterpoint to the often highly political interpretation of this piece. No class struggle, no French Revolution, but rather a focus on the power of music: 1,500 sheets of music are wallpapered across the stage set – notes not only on the walls and ceiling, but also printed on the costume fabrics.
